About Cross Stitch Pattern Maker

A free tool that turns photos and text into cross stitch charts, right in your browser.

What it is and who it is for

Cross Stitch Pattern Maker is for people who stitch: someone turning a photo of their dog into a gift, someone stitching a child’s name, someone who designs their own charts. Start with the pattern maker on the home page, or use the lettering tool and the fabric and skein calculator.

How it works

The tool runs in your browser. Your photo is turned into a chart on your own device, not on our server. Threads are chosen straight from the DMC range, stray stitches are cleaned up, and the chart, the colour key and the skein counts go into a PDF you can print. There is no account. Details are in the privacy policy.

What is free and what is paid

Making, editing and printing patterns is free, with no watermark. Project Pass (US$4.90 for 30 days) adds automatic background removal and many photos at once; Pro (US$7.90/month or US$49/year) adds cloud sync across devices. See the pricing page and the refund policy.

Where the colour data comes from

The DMC thread colours (489 shades, numbers, names and screen colours) come from craft-color-codes by MakeBead, published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. Screen colours are approximations: a thread looks different under different light, so check a shade card or the real skein when the exact colour matters.
